Welcome to the MALCS family!

Here at Baptist University, we place strong emphasis on whole person education, striving to put our students at the very heart of our classroom experience. With our research-focused approach, we also equip them to develop up-to-date knowledge and pedagogies to better cope with a fast-changing world.

We’re especially proud to welcome YOU as the latest batch of Master’s students to English Language and Literature, one of the oldest and most prestigious Departments in the university. You will be walking a path that many former graduates have walked, pondering over the meaning of a text, diving deep into your research, and yes, working hard to meet deadlines over the course of two semesters.

We will challenge you to think outside the box, to question the assumptions that come with every reading of a text or cultural artefact, and to think beyond the immediate confines of a story world. We will take you outside the classroom and ask you to consider how stories circulate around our society, and beyond. We will ask you to perform, critically as well as creatively, a plethora of different assessments across a wide spectrum in your assignments.

Moving beyond the text, we will ask you to consider the adaptive potential of literature as they are transferred from text, to stage, to screen, and to the digital multiverse. With new developments in technology requiring us to live with digital humanities and AI-generative software, we will ask you to labour cautiously and honestly in pursuit of your own individual goals and career aspirations.

Most importantly, we will ask you to be brave and vulnerable, to speak up and be heard, to grapple with the intricacies and nuances of the English language, and to consider how you can make the most of the brief time that you have with us.

Along the way, you’ll be joined by our dedicated team of professors and instructors whose interests and areas of expertise you will gain knowledge from, and under whose guidance and tutelage you will learn to become better readers, listeners, speakers, writers, researchers and life-long learners.

All in all, we hope that you’ll cultivate long-lasting friendships during your time here, connect with our growing alumni network, and find a way to make your own special mark on this planet, whether this be in Hong Kong, the wider China region, or globally.
