Admission Requirements

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) |
|
Applicants seeking admission to the PhD degree programme should possess: |
(a) |
a Master’s degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; or |
(b) |
a Bachelor’s degree with first class honours from a recognized university or comparable institution; or |
(c) |
any other qualification deemed by the Graduate School to be acceptable for this purpose; or |
(d) |
1 AL subject + 2 AS subjects obtainable in any two sittings. |

Candidates who possess (b) but not (a) should have evidence of research achievement/experience. They may be admitted to the MPhil Programme initially, but with a view that they will proceed to the PhD programme after satisfactorily passing assessment at the time of candidature confirmation. |
|
Candidates (c) but not (a) or (b) may be required to take a qualifying examination, in which event their progress shall be reported to the Graduate School at the end of their first year of study. |
|
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) |
|
Applicants seeking admission to the MPhil degree programme should possess: |
(a) |
a Bachelor’s degree with honours from a recognized university or comparable institution; or |
(b) |
any other qualification deemed to be equivalent; |
|
and shall, if required, take a qualifying examination. |
|
Normally, only 1st and 2nd Class Honours graduates will be considered to have met the admission’s criterion of a Bachelor’s degree with honours as stipulated in (a). Graduates with 3rd Class Honours degrees, with a period of relevant work experience and satisfactory results in the qualifying examination, may also be considered. |

Other Admission Related Issues |

Language Requirements |
|
Applicants may be required to prove their language abilities in English and/or Chinese by means of an interview or, for applicants from outside Hong Kong, by means of performance in a test to show acceptable language proficiency, such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Member of Institute of Linguists (MIL) examination. The TOEFL institution code of the Hong Kong Baptist University is 9467. |

Transfer Students |

Under normal circumstances, applicants who are already studying for a master’s degree at Baptist University or other institutions, will not be considered for transfer to any master’s degree courses at Baptist University. |
(3) |
Double Registration |
|
Unless otherwise approved by the University, registered candidates are normally not permitted to register part-time or full-time for any other qualification, either at the University itself or at any other local institution of higher learning. Candidates breaching this regulation are subject to discontinuation of their studies at the University. |
