Double Degree in Master of Arts in Literary and Comparative Studies (MALCS) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and Master of Translation and Interpreting (MCTRANINT) at University of Melbourne (UOM)
Programme Aims and Objectives
This Double Degree Programme provides students with the double opportunity to explore literatures in English, and gain a comprehensive understanding of the practical, theoretical, and academic aspects of translation and interpreting.
The main objectives of the Double Degree Programme are as follows:
– To equip students with a working knowledge of discipline-specific theory, professional research, and capstone experience.
– To foster transdisciplinary scholarship and facilitate intercultural learning.
– To promote industry-facing learning and research.
Medium of Instruction
The medium of instruction for the MALCS Programme is 100% English.
The medium of instruction for the MCTRANINT Programme at UOM involves an active use of both Chinese and English.
Study Period
MALCS is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time programme.
MCTRANINT requires a minimum study period of three semesters, equivalent to one and a half years.
Student Intake
Up to 9 quota in each academic year.
Tuition Fees
Students will pay the regular tuition fee to the first institution in order to obtain their first degree. Upon successful enrollment in the second institution, subject to availability, Double Degree students are entitled to a 10% tuition discount. Participating students will be responsible for other fees and all living expenses while studying abroad.

Admission Requirement
The Double Degree Programme operates bilaterally. Current MALCS students at HKBU have the opportunity to apply for further studies at the University of Melbourne. Similarly, current MCTRANINT students at University of Melbourne can also apply to pursue further studies at Hong Kong Baptist University.
Before pursuing their second degree, students must fulfill the requirements of their first MA degree. Additionally, they must satisfy all the programme-specific requirements listed below:
To be eligible for the Double Degree Programme, MALCS students must:
1.Hold a bachelor’s degree from a reputable institution with an overall cGPA of 3.0/4.0, where 2.0 is a pass.
2. Successfully complete the MALCS programme at HKBU and achieve a minimum cGPA of 3.0/4.0, where 2.5 is a pass.
3.Attain an IELTS score of 6.5, with no sub-band score below 6.0.
4. Possess a good command of Chinese and English, and meet the Chinese and English language requirements set by the University of Melbourne.
University of Melbourne reserves the right to make the final decision regarding admission to the MCTRANINT programme.
To be eligible for the Double Degree Programme, MCTRANINT students must:
1. Have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or higher education institution, or possess a qualification deemed equivalent.
2.Obtain a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 if the applicant’s first degree is not from an institution where the medium of instruction is English.
3.Achieve a weighted average of at least H3 (65%) where 50% is a pass.
4.Undergo an interview with the MALCS Admissions Panel.
Hong Kong Baptist University reserves the right to make the final decision regarding admission to the MALCS programme.
Transfer of Units
This Double degree arrangement applies only to the 27-unit MALCS Programme at HKBU and the 200-point MCTRANINT Programme at UOM. If students wish to pursue alternative study pathways, this credit arrangement may not apply or will need to be re-assessed.
The MCTRANINT Programme will offer MALCS graduates a maximum of 50 points for advanced standings, which is equivalent to the exemption of 4 non-major elective subjects.
MCTRANINT graduates are guaranteed a minimum number of 3 units for credit transfer, or the exemption of ENG 7460 Capstone Project. The maximum number of units for transfer should not exceed 25% (or about 6 units) of the total unit requirement of the MALCS Programme.
Graduation Requirement
Students must successfully complete a minimum of 27 units at HKBU and 200 points at UOM.
Exit Option
Double Degree students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded an MALCS Degree from HKBU and an MCTRANINT Degree from UOM. Those who fail to make progress at the second institution will not receive their second degree, but it will not affect the attainment of their first degree.
